Frederick Paley, 1836

Frederick Paley was the father-in-law of John James Tonks, who married Frederick’s daughter, Ann Paley.

Frederick was a brush maker, possibly of several kinds. We know he made toothbrushes and bone brushes. In the marriage certificate of his daughter, he lists his occupation as “brush drawer,” which is defined:

Brush Drawer: fixed the bristles into the brush handle using lengths of wire to hold each bunch of bristles in place.

If we can find more information about Frederick and his family, there may be a lot of work to do here. If we can access some of the records listed below, we should be able to find out if this Frederick Paley is the same one as this one on Familysearch. If so, all his work is done except sealing to his spouse, and we know his spouse’s name is Ann (according to the census below), so we can get him sealed to her. We’ll also know his birthdate, father’s name, and mother’s first name.

This is the 1871 census, placing Frederick’s birth about 1836.

When I get the opportunity to visit the family history center again (where we can access all the information on the stinking expensive websites that carry the records), I’d like to find these records:

Name: Frederick Paley
Birth County: Middlesex
Age: 15
Born In: 1836
Profession: Errand Boy
Subscribe to see: Relation, Address, Birth Place, Parish, Area, along with the rest of the household

That would probably list Frederick’s parents. The same census should be available at: http://www.ukcensusonline.com/search/ which is also an expensive website.

From the census records, we know that Frederick’s wife’s first names are “Mary A.”

I may have found Frederick’s wife. I’ll attach the marriage record as soon as I can get it, but here’s a record for Frederick Paley marrying a girl named Mary Ann Wilson. Ctrl-F her name on the following URL: http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?gl=34&new=1&gsfn=frederick+&gsln=paley&rank=1&gss=angs-g&mswpn__ftp=&msbdy=1837&so=2

And here’s what we get. The marriage of the two:
