It has a 12th century crusader's grave right by the door. There are several headstones in the churchyard and I have photographed all of them, except the more recent markers which are for modern cremations. I have transcribed the burial register, 1813-1911, so have been able to identify stones where little of the inscription has survived. The church was open when I visited, so I have been able to include tablets and brasses from inside the church. Show more 74 photos · 43 views By: Helen Barrell

First time l have seen this picture,my mother Alice Cobden was great grand daughter of James Patience and Margaret,my mother was born to Alice Gardner(Patience) in Suffolk.my mother new that her mother, was born in Romford Essex but did not know anything more re- the burials in Greensted church Ongar. Since l live only about 5 miles away this is quite interesting information. Not sure who took this picture or why, so would appreciate more information.

Thanks for your comment, Lorraine! I could be wrong, but I believe this photo was taken by someone who has captured photos of nearly all the graves in the cemetery.

So you are in the Greensted church area? That’s awesome! James Patience was my great grandfather, and I’m in Utah, where James’ descendents came after moving to America. Any information you could share about the Greensted church area would be great.

    Hello chas,
Sorry for not seeing your reply,l have only just seen it.my grandmother Alice Patience(born 1873 Romford Essex) she passed away 1921,l obviously didn’t get to meet her,l knew her father was a publican in Upminster Essex,William G Patience, born Ongar ,Essex, and yes his father and mother James and Margaret Patience, would be my great, great grandparents.
I think there son Francis Robert Patience emigrated to Utah mmmm……that’s far away from here. Apart from going back to my grandmother’s father William my mother didn’t know any thing further back than that and all so close to me,it’s not far from London but it is all agricultural land. Hope this finds you welll
    Regards Lorraine .

    Ps.
Hello again, just noticed that there was more than one Patience that went to America, and l’m not sure which one in the family was your descendant.
I also noticed how much Vandis Jenson Hathaway looked so much like my uncle Daniel Gardner my mothers only brother. So sorry to see that he passed away.
    Kind regards Lorraine.

    Hello Chas,
Just looking at the picture of Francis Robert Patience. It does say temple ordinance served. My question is what religion was he, and are you of the same faith, and was he your grandfather? Hope this finds you all well
    Lorraine.
