John C. CARTER was born on 19 May 1782 in Scarborough, Cumberland, Maine. He was christened on 20 May 1782 in Scarborough, Cumberland, Maine. He died on 13 Aug 1852 in Nauvoo, Hancock, Illinois. He was buried in Aug 1852 in Lima-Rocky Run, Hancock, IL, Fletcher Cem. He married Hannah KNIGHT LIBBY on 2 Mar 1805 in Scarborough, Cumberland, ME. John was a sailor in his youth, and lived successively at Scarborough and Newry Maine, and in Hancock County, Illinois. John CARTER and Hannah Knight LIBBY, both natives of Scarborough, Cumberland County, Maine, had a family of eleven children. Two died in infancy; all the others grew to maturity and reared families. John and Hannah lived at Scarborough until about 1810 when they moved to nearby Newry in Oxford County, Maine, where two of their children died and were buried 1815 and 1827. During the 1830 decade they joined the westward migration as did their progeny. Hancock County, Illinois records have a land deed dated 1842 from Jacob DOOLEY to John and Hannah K. L. CARTER. In 1846 some four years later John CARTER Sr. sold this tract to William CARTER. John CARTER Sr. did not leave Illinois as many of his family did when the Latter-day Saints vacated Nauvoo before the mobs assault. John CARTER never joined the LDS Church. Alhough he took Hannah to Illinois, he refused to go to Utah. Hannah left him and traveled west to the Great Salt Lake valley with the Mormons. John remained in Nauvoo until his death on 13 August 1852. His will was dated 9 August 1852 (just four days before death at age 70). His will dated 9 August 1852… mentions Almira, Phillip and Mary Jane also a grandson John DOOLEY. But no rememberance is made of Dominicus, William Furlsbury, John “H”, Eliza Ann, Hannah, Richard’s children, or his widow. Hannah Knight Libby CARTER was living in Utah Territory at that time. John CARTER’s will was filed by the executrix Mary J. CARTER DOOLEY in Adams County, Illinois 19 August 1852. John CARTER was buried in the Fletcher Cemetery at Lima in Rocky Run Township, Hancock County, Illinois.

Original will – filed August 19, 1852 (Probate Court, Box 167) – transcription: “In the Name of God Amen I, John Carter, of the County of Hancock in the State of Illinois, being of sound mind and Memory (blessed be Almighty God for the same) do make and publish this my last Will and Testament in Manner and form following (To Wit.) 1st. It is my will that any funeral expenses and all my just debts be fully paid. 2nd. I give and bequeath to my Daughter Almira Trip, late Almira Carter, five Dollars to her and her heirs respectively. 3rd. I give and bequeath to my son Philip Carter five Dollars to him and his heirs respectively. 4th. I give and bequeath to my Daughter Mary J. Dooley late Mary J. Carter, All the rest of my estate real personal or mixed of whatsoever kind description or quality of which I shall die seized and possessed or to which I shall be entitled at the time of my decease. To have and to hold the same during her Natural life. 5th. I give and bequeath to my Grandson John Dooley the reversion or remainder of my Estate Real person or mixed of what soever kind description or quality and all the profit in come and Advantage that may result there from. From and after the Death of my said Daughter Mary J. Dooley late Mary J. Carter. 6th. I do nominate and appoint my Daughter Mary J. Dooley, late Mary J. Carter to be Executrix of this my last Will and Testament. In testimony where of I have here unto set my hand and seal and publish and decree this to be my last Will and Testament in presence of these Witnesses named below the Ninth day of August in the year of Our Lord One Thousand Eight hundred and fifty two.
