BIRTH: 13 Apr 1806, New Bedford, Bristol, Massachusetts, United States
DEATH: 5 September 1862, Ash Hollow, Boone, Nebraska, United States

Father: (disputed) (Captain) John Hathaway or Prince Hathaway

Mother: (disputed) Ruby Bennet

Married: Susannah Ellen Clark

John Hathaway is mentioned in the book, History of New Bedford and Its Vicinity, which can be read (full text) online.

The following is an account of John Hathaway’s life, according to (I think) Lucille Hathaway Wheeler, and can be found by clicking HERE:

Hathaway Family History
John Hathaway

In the late 1700’s, a man named Hathaway sailed from England to the United States. There wis very little known about this Hathaway except that he was the Captain of a whaling vessel and the father of a son named John, who was born in the year of 1807. John’s father was lost at sea when John was still a small boy. (Lucille Hathaway Wheeler, Personal family genealogy records).

When John grew to be a young man, he joined a crew on a whaling vessel, and in the following several years, he had many sea-faring experiences.

One day when the ocean was very calm, one of John’s cremates spotted a small dark object about fifty yards out from the ship. When they managed to steer the ship closer to the object, they found that it was John, who had somehow fallen overboard. This incident led to much harassment by the other crew members toward the water-logged sailor. (Ibid.)

With the hard work and the clean ocean air, John became a man of very strong stature. (Ellen Hathaway LeChemenant, John Hathaway Family History, P. 1.) One night, as he was walking along the deck of the ship, he was attacked by six of his fellow crewmen, who he had had differences of opinion with earlier. He jumped away from them and picked up a club that was laying nearby. Swinging the club rapidly about him, he managed to knock all six of them down (Lucille Hathaway Wheeler, comments and recollections from family history and records).

As time went on, John visited many ports. His home port was New Bedford, Massachusetts, where his mother, step-father, and step-brothers and sisters lived. His mother, who’s name we believe to have been Ruth, had remarried a man by the name of Brown. John apparently did not get along with his step-father, and his visits to see his mother were few and far between. There was one three year interval when John was out to sea and had no contact with his family at all.

Tiring of the seaman’s way of life, John returned to New Bedford. This was to be his last visit with his family. He soon became restless, gathered his belongings together, and left for New York State to find work in the lumber mills.

He found a job in a lumber came in Catturagus County (Wheeler, op. cit., p. 1). By this time, John was 34 years old.

At the lumber camp, John met an unusually pretty young girl of 19 who was working as the camp cook. Her name was Susannah Ellen Clark. Susannah was as impressed with John’s maturity and stature as John was with her youth and beauty, and after a short courtship, they were married in the year of 1841 (Ibid.)

Daniel Webster Hathaway was born to John and Susannah Hathaway in Catturagus County, New York, on June 11, 1842. Two years later a second son, Phillip, was born. Phillip died shortly after his birth (Wheeler, Op. cit., P. 1).

Soon after losing their second child, John and Susannah decided to move to Pennsylvania, where they had heard there was homestead land available. Many of the other logging company employees joined them in this move.

In order to make the trip from New York State to Pennsylvania, it was necessary to cross the Allegheny Mountains. At that time there were no roads, and they made sturdy rafts from the plentiful logs and floated all of their belongings down the Allegheny River. After a journey of several days, they arrived at a small settlement called Liberty. Here they made their new home where three or more sons and one daughter were born to them.

The Mormon Missionaries came to Liberty in 1860. John, his family and many of their neighbors Joined the Mormon church (Lucille Hathaway Wheeler, comments on information compiled from the History and Census of Pennsylvania at the Salt Lake City Genealogical Library). They were among the first converts to the Mormon church.

About Our Family Research

Hi all you Hathaway relatives! Welcome to my page. I am a descendant of Leonard Jensen Hathaway son of Leonard Leroy Hathaway son of Elisha Brown Hathaway son of John and Susannah Hathaway. I am hoping to get the descendants of John Hathaway united and by combining our family information positively identify the ancestors of John Hathaway born April 13, 1806 in Bristol, Massachusetts. The three original documented recorded references to John’s birth that I could find are as follows.
1:The 1850 Federal Census of Port Allegeney, Liberty Twp., McKean Co., Pennsylvania. John is age 43, a laborer and place of birth is Mas.
2:The 1860 Federal Census of Port Allegeny, Liberty Twp., McKean Co, Pennsylvania. John is listed as age 55 , Farm Laborer, place of birth-Vt.
3:The Endowment House Record, 20, December 1862. Recorded by Susannah Hathaway. Record as follows: Hathaway John, deceased, born the 13 April 1806. Place of birth: Town-Bristow(looked like Barstow), County-left blank, State of birth-Mass. Died 5 Sept 1862 on the plains of Nebraska.

As you can see from the above there are discrepancies in the above information. None are original birth records. Hopefully John gave the information for at least one of the Census but Susannah could have given it all.
My Families Word of Mouth History is that John’s parents were John and Betsey Hathaway. I’ve heard Captain and Betsey Hathaway too. Kent Hathaway went to New Bedford and proved that Prince and Ruby Hathaway are not our John’s parents.

September 18, 1891 Daniel Clark died at his home, near Silver Springs, in this township, at the age of seventy-seven. He was born in Lawrenceville, Tioga co., Pennsylvania. Deceased had been a resident of this borough for forty-five years, and was well known in business for his squarenessof deal. It may be said of him that he was a neighbor, unexcelled for kindness. His widow and ten children survive him, with grief-stricken hearts, besides many relatives and friends. Thus one after another one of our aged citizens are passing away. We pay a tribute of respect to the dead, especially to the aged dead. Funeral services of Mr. Clark was held in the Presbyterian Church at 2 o’clock, last sabbath, Rev. M.H. Abbey officiating. After which his remains, followed by a large concorse of people, were carried to Fair View Cemetery for interment.

John died crossing the plains, Susannah, his wife had herself sealed to him in the Endowment House soon after her arrival. She was married for time to Wesley Rose the same day. Susan has listed her husbands information as: John Hathaway, Born April 13, 1806 in Bristow(in the town slot), (county left blank), Massachusetts. Ten years later and her forth husband she is listed as being sealed to Isaiah Campbell with no cancellation of first sealing. Since she did this family have sealed the children to this last husband and the first.

At the church Historical Dept. I found that John and Susan Hathaway are recorded as having come to Nauvoo in the Summer of 1845 from the Hornby Branch, New York bringing a recommend.

They are listed as borrowing money, in the Perpetual Emigration Fund to cross the plains in 1862.

They are in the Horton D Haight Ox Cart Company, with name spelled Hatheway.

John was supposedly a whaler off of the coast of Massachusetts. After a few years he went to New York. He met a girl, Susan Ellen Clark, who was working in a lumber camp as a cook who he married.

Dear Heather Dodge,

I have a few questions to ask about John Hathaway. Who was he married to and where did he marry?

Hathaway is a common name in this area. I do have one John Hathaway age 18 went out on the ship Martha on July1, 1825 returned June 3, 1826. His age was 18 he was 5’5 1/2″ light complexion and brow3n hair. The age is right if he was born in 1806. His place of birth is listed as Dartmouth.

John is not listed in either the New Bedford or Dartmouth vital records but that does not mean anything quite a few births were not recorded.

Sincerely,

Joan E Barney

Dear Ms. Dodge, According to “Whaling Logbooks and Journals 1613-1928” no logbook for the 1825 voyage of the Martha exists in a public collection. “The History of the American Whale Fishery,” by Alexander Starbuck, says the master of this voyage was Sheffel Reed and the destination was the Brazil whaling grounds. The ship returned June 2, 1826, with 1,900 barrels of whale oil. The wife of Capt. Sheffel Reed was Almira Hathaway of Fairhaven, the fifth of eight children of Joseph and Ann Dillingham Hathaway. For additional information, you may want to locate a copy of “Hathaways of America,” edited by Elizabeth Starr Versailles, printed in 1970 by Gazette Printing of Northampton, MA. Good luck with your research.
Sincerely, Laura Pereira, Library Assistant, New Bedford Whaling Museum

———————————— Possible ways of travel from Hornby to Illinois::::::::::

Two alternatives to the travel route to Illinois from Steuben Co., would have been 1) overland down what today has become the Southern Tier Expressway, which follows what I believe is an old Indian track to the west. From Erie, PA, it might have been faster to sail down Lake Erie to Toledo, then overland to Illinois, which would have been faster than sailing up through Lakes Huron and back down Lake Michigan. The latter lake was and is, very treacherous for sailing, and wasn’t for the faint-hearted. A second route would have been similar, going up to the Erie Canal, and doing a packet to Buffalo, then down Lake Erie to Toledo and overland to Illinois. The terrain from Toledo west across northwest Ohio and Indiana wasn’t too rough, and there was a well-traveled route which today is Indiana 120 across the extreme northern part of the state. There was also a partial canal system from Toledo west up the Maumee River to Ft. Wayne, Indiana, then cross country on what is today US30.

Dec 1998, by e-mail from Heather Dodge, Lyman, Wyoming, (dau of Leonard Hathaway) they have found records in Nauvoo of John and Susann Hathaway coming from the Hornsby Conference in New York to Nauvoo and their baptisms. They must have left Nauvoo and went to McKean Co., PA. Possibly because of her mother who died in 1847?

In year 2001 Heather Dodge informed me that there was a place close to where the Hathaway family lived that was called unofficially Nauvoo as there were Mormon families that lived there and apparently they were baptised there and not in Nauvoo, Illinois. I will try for more documentation.

Letter from Lucille Hathaway Colson, Wagner to VonZza Hathaway Melville dated 22 Feb 1977
“. . . . . . .About 2 years ago we found John Hathaway’s parents at the Salt Lake Library. We did this through the 1810 Census of New Bedford, Bristol Co., Mass. finding all the Hathaways with a small son named John. Then used the process of elimination. This was excepted [accepted] by the Genealogy Society and we have extended this back quiet [quite] away. But we still don’t have our Vital Record.” (Note from VonZza – I don’t think the 1810 Census lists the children’s names, only a slash mark for the age group. The above info is not definitive for John’s parentage in my opinion)

Letter from a Clerk of New York State Offices dated May 31, 1967. “New York State did not require marriage certificated to be recorded with the town clerks until the late 1880’s. I seached the 1850 Census of Cattaraugus County, but did not find any Hathaway listed.”
