Obituary (Deseret News, 28 May 1995):

Our loving father, grandfather, brother and friend, Merrill William Curtis, passed away Thursday, May 25, 1995, in Sandy, Utah.

He was born October 5, 1910, in Sunnyside, Utah, the son of William Ezra and Grace Chloe Lake Curtis. He married Leola Jex Freshwater, August 17, 1932, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. She preceded him in death on July 30, 1992. As LDS Church members, Merrill and Leola devoted years to working with inactive families. Their interest in them was sincere. He was especially dedicated to his family, earning all he could for them by getting up early in the best or worst weather, driving with a load of brick, being well out of town by daylight, sometimes 80 hours per week. But he still found time for the kids, and the family camping trips will never be forgotten. After a week in the mountains with us, though, he would take Mom and sneak off for a few days with her. In 1958, he won the title of Utah’s Top Pop.He is survived by 10 children: Nolan, Salt Lake; Kay, Draper; Verna Cheney, Buhl, ID; Patsy Jarvis, Salt Lake; DeLon, Salt Lake; Rosemary Sjostrom, Blackfoot, ID; Ellen Clark, Bellingham, WA; Debra Hathaway and Lealeth Miller, both of Magna, and Sterling, Salt Lake. He is also survived by 3 children whom he fostered after the deaths of his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Warren and Ruby Dalley. They are Lorraine, Bernice and Roland. Others include 41 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, 5 sisters and 1 brother. He was preceded in death by his parents and 3 sisters.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, May 30, 12 Noon, at the Riviera Ward Chapel, 601 E. Mansfield (3115 S.) Ave. Friends may call at the Larkin Mortuary, 260 E. South Temple, Monday 6-8 PM, and at the ward Tuesday, one hour prior to services. Interment in Larkin Sunset Gardens, 10600 S. 1700 E., Sandy.
